Hot new phone alert: Motorola Droid from Verizon Wireless goes on sale next week on Nov. 6. But wait no further to get a closer look. Verizon and Motorola folks stopped by my office this morning to show it off. And they’ve left one for me to play with for one week. So, to appease the 71 readers who want me to bring back gadget coverage (you, too, can sign up HERE ), I’ve got photos, a video and a short review below. I am personally excited about this phone because I have come to heavily rely on Google Android, which powers my T-Mobile G1 as well as the new Droid.

We’ve seen the marketing campaign, the commercial, and the iDon’t care spoof of the commercial — and today Verizon offers a demo video of the highly-anticipated phone.First a refresher on the specs: 3.7-inch touchscreen, 5-megapixel camera, 3G, Wi-Fi, both physical and virtual keyboards, 16 GB microSD memory card included and a beta version of the Google Maps Navigation feature we just wrote about earlier today.

The much awaited Motorola Droid will be available from Verizon on 6 November. How long it will be before the Google Android 2.0 powered smartphone is available in Asia, only time will tell.

If you guys, like us, were hoping that the upcoming HTC Desire aka Droid Eris will be as good as or even better than the Motorola Droid, well, we’ve got sad news for you. Word is that it will only run on a 528MHz Qualcomm processor and Android 1.5. It’s not exactly what we were hoping for, but on the bright side, we also hear that it will only retail for just $99. The Droid Eris will probably be marketed as a mid-level device.

Google on Wednesday revealed a free online navigation service that will be a part of its forthcoming Android 2.0 mobile operating system. It could also come to the iPhone , the company said, if given the green light by Apple. A beta of Google Maps Navigation will arrive next week when the Motorola Droid smartphone debuts on Verizon ’s network. The service will be added to all other Android devices, as well, when they are formally updated to version 2.0.

Motorola Inc. and Verizon Wireless on Wednesday unveiled the Droid smart phone , which the companies plan to aggressively push as a challenger to Apple Inc.’s iPhone. The Droid, which will go on sale for $199 starting Nov. 6, is the first device using Google Inc .’s Android software to run on Verizon Wireless’ network. The major push from the biggest U.S. wireless carrier underscores the momentum of Google’s Android platform, which has seen a number of phones launch in recent months.

If you look back at recent history, one may consider the iPhone as the main conduit in the proliferation of touchscreen phones today. The iPhone also not only marked the entry of Apple into the mobile phone biz, but more importantly, through its exclusivity on AT&T, became a signature device for the US carrier that no doubt helped them rake it a substantial amount of earnings. The same could probably be said of the Motorola Droid as it has the makings of a landmark device for Verizon.
