Google ( NSDQ: GOOG ) threw us a bit of a curveball with their Chrome OS announcement, and while not unwelcome, it certainly has mobile developers wondering where they stand with Android and any plans for netbook apps. Jeff Haynies heads up a company called Appcelerator which works on porting web apps between browser, Android and iPhone – we tap his experiences with web-based software for his opinions on Chrome OS and what it means for Android and developers.

The last 2 weeks we have been inundated with news about Google Chrome OS and what it could mean for the market place. Then yesterday it was found that LiveAndroid was also announcing that it had a PC compatible version in beta status. Of course there is skepticism on both sides of this argument but today I was able to get LiveAndroid working and had some time to play with it. To begin you will first need to download the image files ( Torrent is best) and then either burn the image to a disk or use a Virtual Machine to boot it.

T-Mobile G1 owners already have an idea what to expect from Google’s Android operating system, but now anyone can give the OS a whirl, and they can do it on their PC. No convoluted hacks required – just download the Live CD image, burn it to disc, and reboot your PC. The hacked OS comes courtesy of the Beijing-based LiveAndroid team, who released its first LiveAndroid alpha build in May. Now in version 0.2, the new release is based on Android Cupcake (version 1.5) and adds some useful functionality , like a mouse-controlled curser, keyboard support, and Ethernet.

For decades when you purchased a new Microsoft product you knew it would take more disk space, memory and processor speed than most competitive products on the market. As an ex-MIS Director I can tell you firsthand how new Windows upgrades meant new machines were mandatory. Vista is no exception… You just can’t seem to have a fast enough machine for this OS as even with a state of the art chip, gobs of memory and the fastest graphics coprocessor you can get, you will see hourglass icons on a routine basis.

Would you like to try out Google Android on your laptop? There have been a couple of hackers working on getting the Google Android operating system to x86 and they have now released a second version of their Android LiveCD build. This now means you can download and boot and run Android via your optical drive, install it in a virtual machine, or install it on your laptop. No doubt there will still be some bugs in it though so dont get too annoyed if it bugs out on you.

Skyhook Wireless, released its July report on trends in location-aware apps from Apple’s App Store, Google’s Android Marketplace, Blackberry App World, Nokia’s Ovi Store, and the Palm App Catalog. The report shows the evolution of LBS app pricing in the two longest running stores, the Android Marketplace and Apple App Store. In both stores, $0.99 is the most popular paid category, and only a handful of apps sell for $6.00 to $8.99. Some location apps sell for $9.99 or higher in both stores.
